Job Hunting Tips

Don't ask for a job, ask for a reference

Good Monday morning,

So it is with some hesitation that you pick up the phone, you dial the number, you're a little nervous and feeling a little awkward about calling your old friend (really more of an old acquaintance) in such a situation ... It's kind of embarrassing. ...

"Um, hey, Sally, it's Charles. Yeah. Well, I got cut in the most recent round of layoffs, and I was wondering if you knew of any jobs available out there. ..."

Well, Sally is going to be polite, but she is also going to try to get off the phone quicker than a balloon floating through the Denver sky (what was that all about, by the way? Bizarre!)

Why? Because we all hate to say "no." To a friend, to an acquaintance, to an old work colleague. It is as awkward to be asked as it is to ask.

What's the alternative?

Don't ask for a job, ask for a reference.

Job Hunting During a Recession

The global credit crisis and flat-lining domestic economy could make this one of the most challenging times to be looking for a job in recent history. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of unemployed increased by 2.2 million between September 2007 and September 2008, and the September 2008 unemployment rate hit 6.1 percent -- the highest level in five years. Why network?

Talking to or contacting people you know to find job leads is the most effective way to find a job. Because most of us find a job through personal contacts-people we already know such as our friends and family, our doctor, dentist, and people we meet when we go shopping and during our normal everyday lives. Personal contacts are also the people that our friends and family know.
